This volume of AN contains the proceedings of the international conference The origin and evolution of cosmic magnetism, held in Bologna (Italy) from August 29th to September 2nd, 2005, hosted by the Istituto di Radioastronomia INAF. Since cosmic magnetism has been recognized as one of five key science projects for The Square Kilometre Array (SKA), one of the goals of the conference was to discuss the current knowledge on this and related issues, and to determine how observations with the SKA, in cooperation with other future facilities, will provide a deeper understanding of the role of magnetic fields in the cosmological process and in the structures that we observe today.
The meeting started with the discussion of theoretical aspects, followed by the observational results and implications, and finally by the future prospects. In addition to the talks, listed in Sect. 2, about 40 posters were presented.
