Theoretical models of cataclysmic variables, interacting binary systems comprising a red component and an accreting white dwarf or main-sequence star with a disk supported by angular momentum, are reviewed. Observational data on the outbursts of SS Cyg are summarized and analyzed, and the stability of stars in semidetached systems is discussed with reference to a simple analogy to a water-filled, elastically supported cylinder. A time-dependent disk-evolution model which accounts for the response of the disk to fluctuations in the mass-transfer rate is developed, and some numerical results are presented graphically. Disk instabilities are found to lead to irregular oscillations with periods of hours to days in local regions of the disk, perhaps like the rapid flickering observed during quiescent periods of cataclysmic variables.
