Deep CCD array exposures of the unique X-ray source, 1E0630 + 178, have revealed a faint object in the error box of the X-ray source. A correlation technique is applied to microdensitometry tracings of the field in order to improve the faint excess detection capability, but the object is not confirmed at its present position. Only a weak, insignificant excess is found close to its position, which is probably due to a fluctuation of the plate background. At an angular distance of about 10 arcsec, however, an object is found which is not present in the recently obtained and significantly deeper CCD images. This may indicate a proper motion of the optical counterpart of 0.37 + or - 0.03 arcsec/year, implying that the distance of the Geminga object in whose direction it lies is probably only about 100 pc, consistent with the indications for very small interstellar X-ray absorption.
