The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) project was created in 2003 as the union of three existing Extremely Large Telescope Projects: The Caltech and University of California CELT, the AURA GSMT, and the Canadian ACURA VLOT. The project has raised US$63M for a detailed design phase commencing in 2004 which will last to the transition into construction in 2009. The TMT Science Advisory Committee has developed a broad scientific vision for the TMT capabilities that utilizes the light-gathering power of a 30m diameter primary for seeing-limited observations and also requires a nearly diffraction-limited 30m optical-infrared telescope. Highlights from the scientific justification are studies of extra-solar planet formation, star and galaxy formation, black hole dynamics and cosmology. The telescope, AO systems and instrument suite will provide a broad capability and have been developed to allow the TMT to play an important complementary role to other forefront astronomical facilities now planned for the coming two decades. had a May 2006 Conceptual Design Review and is working towards a fall 2006 cost review. TMT is currently evaluating six high quality astronomical sites, from which it expects to qualify a number as scientifically suitable for locating TMT. TMT is open to the participation of institutions as instrument associates and will provide access for all US and Canadian astronomers.
