Satellite galaxies of the Milky Way currently undergoing tidal disruption such as the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf and Magellanic clouds offer a unique opportunity to constrain an effective violation of the equivalence principle in the dark sector. Theories in which cold dark matter (CDM) couples to an additional low-mass dark particle naturally lead to a long-range force in the dark sector. An additional inverse-square-law force acting solely between CDM particles would manifest itself as an effective violation of the equivalence principle in the dynamics of CDM compared to that of collisionless baryonic particles such as stars. Such a violation has been proposed in a cosmological context to address perceived problems with structure formation, but in such a setting its effects are degenerate with a host of other cosmological parameters. In contrast, detailed observations of the tidal tails of a disrupting satellite, such as those recently performed by the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) on the Sgr dwarf, could reveal an additional long-range force in the dark sector through an asymmetry between the leading and trailing arms of the tidal streams. An attractive force would drag the dark-matter-dominated core of a satellite around the Galactic center at a faster rate than any tidally disrupted stars, leading to a relative enhancement of the trailing arm compared to the leading arm. By measuring stellar surface densities along the great circle subtended by a tidal stream formed over several orbits as in the case of the Sgr dwarf, one might hope to constrain a long-range force less than 1% the strength of gravity.
