The ESSENCE project is a 5-year survey to constrain the dark energy equation-of-state parameter, w, to 10% by discovering and studying 200 Type Ia supernovae from 0.2 < z < 0.8. By setting a new standard in quantifying and controlling the systematics uncertainties that can afflict precision supernova cosmology, we are addressing the fundamental question facing cosmology today: is dark energy consistent with a simple cosmological constant or is it something else entirely? In this talk we present the cosmological constraints from the first three years of the ESSENCE project. We conclude with prognostications on the future of supernova cosmology.This work is partially supported by grant AST-0443378 from the US National Science Foundation.
