Tracking data for interplanetary spacecraft navigation has historically come from individual large antennas (one-way and two-way Doppler, and two-way range) or from pairs of large antennas separated by intercontinental distances (three-way Doppler, and VLBI). The Deep Space Network is studying arrays of many small-diameter antennas to supplement or replace the existing large antennas. The primary motivation for this is to obtain a large increase in sensitivity for telemetry downlink, but the effects on future spacecraft navigation are also important. The major difference between a signal from a single large antenna and a single from an array of small antennas is that it is not financially possible to stabilize or calibrate the delay or phase through the electronics and signal transmission path from each of hundreds of antennas. Thus, the issue is how closely the delay and phase characteristics of a combined array signal will reproduce the characteristics of a signal from a single, well calibrated, antenna. This poster will present the expected error levels for several relevant observables from arrays of small antennas and compare them with the errors produced by the existing DSN 70-m and 34-m antennas. This work was done at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
