The NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics is developing the 84-116 GHz (ALMA Band 3) heterodyne receiver cartridges as the central Canadian contribution to the construction phase of the ALMA observatory. The Band 3 cartridges will be used for ALMA commissioning, calibration, and for a wide variety of science observations. The pre-production phase of this development is now well-advanced, and the first Band 3 cartridges have been assembled and extensively tested. The exceptionally stringent performance specifications have been met, and the first cartridge delivery to the ALMA North American Front End Integration Centre is imminent. The technology and performance of the first cartridge prototypes is described and an overview of the ALMA science which can be done with Band 3 is discussed.
