We present initial results from a study of the HI/optical properties of several hundred volume selected galaxies with velocities < 3000 km/s that fall within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint. The HI properties (and upper limits) are extracted from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) data cubes with prior knowledge of galaxy positions and velocities. Subsequent follow-up observations at Arecibo were done to obtain HI data for galaxies below the HIPASS threshold. These data, combined with our HI selected sample, allow for a more complete census of the baryonic content of nearby galaxies. We examine the optical and HI properties of this sample and compare them to our HI selected galaxies.
