The Homunculus nebula was created by Eta Carinae’s Great Eruption in the 1840’s. Both ends of the expanding bipolar nebula are defined by polar caps that have a unique and unstudied spectrum involving interaction with surrounding material. HST STIS/CCD spectra taken as part of the HST Eta Carinae treasury project spatially resolve the NW cap, revealing a sharp-lined nebular spectrum, composed mainly of forbidden lines with unexpected velocity structure and an area of extended emission that stretches well beyond the Homunculus and the expected boundary of the cap.
