Recent theoretical work based on the current paradigm has made strict predictions about the nature of the secondary stars in white dwarf interacting binaries. In particular, the thermal nature and mass of the donor star as a function of orbital period. Recent observations of cataclysmic variables are challenging this view. The discovery of an apparent dichotomy between secondary star atmospheric abundances has raised the possibility of a different evolutionary path for the binaries based on the magnetic nature of their white dwarf. This difference might also point to an orbital period property suggesting a different formation mechanism between long and short period CVs. A summary of the currently known secondary star properties and masses will illustrate that more work is required to understand these issues. Stellar activity on the secondary star, often cited as the cause of high / low state behavior in magnetic CVs, may finally have some hard observational evidence as to its existence. A brief review of new results will be presented and will provide a few surprises.
