X-ray binaries containing neutron stars have a wide range of properties, including a range of companion masses, orbital properties and different modes of accretion onto the neutron star. Here is considered a selection of X-ray binary systems, including Hercules X-1 and Vela X-1, where the orbits and companion properties are well known. For these systems various methods have been used to deduce the properties of the accretion flows. For example, for Hercules X-1 the general nature of the 35-day cycle as observed in X-rays and optical radiation has been used to deduce the shape of the twisted and tilted accretion disk. However even for Hercules X-1, the nature of the absorption dips is not well understood, although they are generally associated with the mass stream from companion HZ Her to the disk. Some of the open issues associated with and recent progress in understanding these flows will be discussed. This work supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
