I will review the population of rapidly rotating neutron stars with low-mass, Roche-lobe-filling binary companions, which are the presumed progenitors millisecond radio pulsars. There are currently 7 known accretion-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars and 15 known nuclear-powered millisecond X-ray pulsars, with two pulsars occupying both classes simultaneously. All of the accretion-powered pulsars are in short-period binaries with extremely low-mass companions. Three systems have nearly identical 42-minute orbital periods.
