ALMA offers to revolutionize the way we look at the distant Universe. By reaching into the regions of galaxies invisible using optical techniques to reveal the astrophysics of star formation directly, we will add ALMA's view to get an unprecedentedly complete picture of galaxy evolution out to and beyond the epoch of reionization. I will describe some of the exciting possibilities for new extragalactic astrophysics with ALMA, and the links with both the existing cutting edge of investigations and other facilities.
