The processes occuring in normal and in active galaxies are examined. Causes for activity in a galaxy can be related to interaction effects between several galaxies. In investigations involving active galaxies, a remarkable object, which might occupy a key position between interacting and active galaxies, was found. This object is the radio galaxy NGC 6240. In connection with its special characteristics, the galaxy has been classified as 'peculiar'. On the basis of the appearance of the center of the NGC 6240, it was concluded that an excitation by means of shock waves was involved. Further studies of NGC 6240 revealed the existence of the existence of two nodes within the central structure. The possibility is considered that the two nodes represent the nuclei of two colliding galaxies. Attention is given to aspects of dynamic friction, the double nucleus as mini quasar, and the origin of the radio emission.
