A formula which gives the equation of time, the difference between solar time and mean time, as a function of UT is proposed. The formula is valid for any epoch within 30 centuries of the present day, and it provides results which are precise to about 3 s of time. Ignoring the distinction between the time-scales of ephemeris time and UT, expressions have also been derived for the equation of ephemeris time, the difference between the longitude of the mean sun and the right ascension of the apparent sun.
