The detuned recycling technique for reducing the photon-counting noise in a laser interferometric gravitational wave detector has been applied to the problem of the detection of gravitational waves from coalescing binary systems containing neutron stars or black holes. The spectral density function is shown to depend on the relative size of the losses in the recycling and cavity mirrors, the bandwidth over which the sensitivity of the detector is improved, and the frequency of the signal at which sensitivity is enhanced. A Newtonian order detuned recycling is found to improve the SNR by one third over that of standard recyling.
