Structural parameters for elliptical and spiral galaxies in Virgo, Ursa Major and the Local Group have been derived by decomposing 2MASS Ks images. We have studied the effect of the shape parameter n (Sérsic 1968) on the spheroid luminosity over an extended range of galactic morphologies (-5 < T < 10), and in two cluster environments. With n variable, we find that (M/L)K scales weakly with luminosity. Previous suggestions for a stronger relation between the mass-to-light ratio with luminosity are artefacts from modelling with an r1/4-law.
