The steady state structure of intermediate shocks (ISs) in a purely resistive MHD medium is examined together with the relationship of ISs to rotational discontinuities. The results are presented in terms of magnetic hodograms in which the two components of the magnetic field tangential to the shock surface are plotted against each other. It was found that all ISs that have an upstream normal flow speed, v(x1), less than the local small-amplitude fast-mode wave speed, c(f1), and a downstream normal flow speed, v(x2), greater than the local small-amplitude slow-mode wave speed, c(s2), have a unique magnetic structure consisting mainly of a rotation of the tangential magnetic field, accompanied by a change in field magnitude. This type of shock is called a subfast weak IS. A subfast strong IS has the v(x1) less than c(f1) and v(x2) less than c(s2) instead.
