The influence of active regions on line of sight velocity measurements is discussed. The results from a model that includes the effects of sunspots and closely reproduces the data of Claverie et al. (1982) are presented. The effect of sunspots on the integrated velocity signal is closely related to the active region/photosphere line contrast. It is shown that the resonance lines are not ideally suited for these measurements. Other choices of spectral lines are discussed.
