The classification in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (Kholopov et al., 1985) of Sy Hyi as a suspected R Coronae Borealis (RCB) star is called into question. Photometric and spectroscopic observations are reported which suggest that the star should be reclassified as a semiregular variable. It is pointed out that the amplitude previously found for this star is not representative of RCB stars in general, which display declines in light due to dust obscuration of 5-8 magnitudes. Sy Hyi has been reported by Shapley and Hughes (1934) to have a photographic magnitude range of 13.4-15.5.
