The source of cosmic rays is discussed analytically in terms of gamma ray astronomy data and observations of the Magellanic Clouds (MC) and galactic supernova remnants (GSR). Calculations are given for the mean flux of gamma rays measured near the earth and the estimated fluxes from the Galaxy and from MC, assuming equivalent elemental abundances. The near-earth data are extrapolated from observed pion decays. It is also shown that the measured near-earth antiproton flux could only have arisen from compact sources, i.e., young GSR. The GSR would necessarily go through a bright, gamma ray emitting phase of intensities large enough to be the source of sufficient particles to produce reactions leading to the observed near-earth antiproton flux.
