The work devoted to the identification of double and multiple stars for the Hipparcos input catalog is presented. Ground based observations, and photometric and astrometric aspects are included. The aim of the work is to improve the main stream of the data reduction. The tasks performed by the input catalog (INCA) double star working groups are reported. The contents of the catalog of the components of double and multiple stars is given. The search for the over abundant and missing entries in the INCA data base is included.
