The Hawking criterion for the stability of the thermodynamical equilibrium between a Schwarzschild black hole and its own radiation (E rad less than 1/4 M) is refined theoretically by means of Page's expression for the renormalized stress tensor. The numerical procedure whereby the masses of two Schwarzschild black holes m1 and m2 have approximately equal masses is reformulated so that m2 has much greater mass than m1. It is found that the Hawking criterion remains an adequate approximation of stability even for Planck-mass black holes and for box radii comparable with the size of the black hole.
