The concentration and isotopic composition of deep-seated nitrogen in large (gram size) diamonds from the Mbuji Mayi kimberlite district of Zaire have been investigated. A wide range of variation (between 100-2100 ppm) was found in the nitrogen concentrations. The (15)N-depleted nitrogen was associated with the higher nitrogen concentrations. The large diamonds were found to be homogeneous in (13)C concentrations, while variations occur within small octahedral diamonds from the same district. The total range of variations is about the same for the large diamonds, and the carbonates from the local kimberlites. The diamond isotopic data could indicate a complex history within a deep-seated isotope fractionating system. The nitrogen results indicate that nitrogen in diamonds, is, on the average, depleted of (15)N relative to the atmosphere, sediments, and the upper mantle.
