The balloon program of the Centre National d'Etudes Spaciales (CNES-France) is reported. The program components, the means developed and the future programs are discussed. The interest in the study of balloon flight in the terrestrial environment or high above the dense layers of the atmosphere, using a wide variety of scientific instruments, is underlined. The balloon has played for more than 20 years a very specific and original part in space research. This is the reason why CNES maintained and developed a very active balloon program for both French and foreign users.
