The interaction of two intense magnetic clouds with the same corotating high-speed solar wind stream is studied for two successive rotations in the August and September 1978. In one event, the cloud was overtaken by the stream. In the other event the cloud approached and interacted with the stream, but was not overtaken. The characteristics of the two events are discussed, noting the importance of an enhancement of Alfvenic speed in accelerating the cloud. Also, consideration is given to the properties of the geomagnetic storm and cosmic ray decrease caused by the clouds.
