Although much useful work on galactic nuclei will be done by the Space Telescope, much higher resolution will be required for direct observation of many nuclear structures such as broad line regions and central star clusters in any but the nearest galaxies. Direct images are needed to examine the geometry and morphology of active galactic nuclei. High resolution spectroscopic observations of the nuclear stellar dynamics offer the best method to investigate the occurrence of massive nuclear black holes. High resolution arrays will work best on bright nuclear components, but may have difficulty observing the much fainter nuclear star fields.
