The acceleration of electrons in a model plane shock wave is studied in the guiding-center approximation. Acceleration of electrons is a shock-drift mechanism in nature. Electrons perform grad-B and curvature drifts, which have opposite directions, in the shock layer. Due to the grad-B drift, electrons gain energy. During the motion in the shock layer, electrons perform large shifts in the Bn plane and in the perpendicular plane as well.
