Expressions are derived for the probability (Phi) of a stellar encounter producing a specified increment in the squared velocity as well as for the encounter multiplicity coefficient (lambda) in the case of a plane homogeneous medium of field stars. When allowance is made for multiple encounters, the function Phi no longer results in the divergences typical of the kinetics of a gravitating medium.
