A technique for robust variable star detection suitable for automated searches is described, focusing on new results for Cepheid-bearing LMC cluster NGC 1866, and NGC 3201. Multiepoch photometry lists made either in two or more bandpasses, or pairwise in a single bandpass are applied. The correlation in brightness change between paired frames allows the extraction of information on variability in the presence of random photometric noise. A statistical method for determining the type of variable star or degree of contamination by an unresolved source, as well as a bootstrap method for predicting confidence intervals for detection of real variability, are described. The application of this technique to NGC 1866 has led to the discovery of 12 new Cepheid variables, and a determination of periods for all but one of the 23 NGC 1866 Cepheids. Also obtained is evidence for photometric contamination by unresolved companion stars, and the discovery of a RRab variable, as well as three longer-period red variables. Several main-sequence variable stars were detected.
