The isotopic composition of strontium haa been measured in thirty-four late-Cenozoic basaltic lavas from the Basin-Range province and adjacent areas in the western United States. The 87 Sr / 86 Sr ratios observed range from 0.7032 to 0.7104. However, most of the analyzed Basin-Range and Colorado Plateau basalts have 87 Sr / 86 Sr ratios in the range of those measured in oceanic basalts. Some systematic variations in 87 Sr / 86 Sr are observed in going from the Basin-Range province and Colorado Plateaus to adjacent areas. Generally, basalts from the Sierra Nevada "sub-province", the Rio Grande Depression, and the northern Basin-Range province have higher 87 Sr / 86 Sr ratios. In most cases these variations in isotopic composition seem to arise from isotopic differences in the source regions rather than from crustal contamination of ascending magmas. A petrologic model, incorporating magmatic mantle intrusion into the uppermost mantle beneath the Basin-Range province, is suggested to explain the observed variations in isotopic composition in volcanic rocks from this region. In this model the anomalously thin Basin-Range crust is attributed to partial melting and mobilization of the lower portion of an originally thicker Precambrian crust. This model appears to reasonably explain the evolution of Cenozoic volcanic activity in this region.
