The authors have made deep maps of the spiral galaxy M51 at λλ2.8 cm, 2.0 cm, and 1.3 cm using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Comparison with synthesis maps at lower frequencies is made and the spectral index distributions in two different frequency domains are presented. The separation of the thermal and nonthermal radio emission is performed on the basis of the variation of the radio spectral index. The integrated radio continuum spectrum is rediscussed. The distribution of dust in M51 follows that of the heavy element abundance rather than that of the (atomic and molecular) gas. The dust in M51 is uniformly heated as a function of galactocentric distance. This rules out a deficiency of massive stars as observed towards the centre of our Milky Way. The average strength of the magnetic field in M51 is 11±3 μG with an exceptionally high degree of alignment due to the action of density wave shock fronts.
