A description is presented of the most important stages in the signal processing procedure of an VLBI system, taking into account the digital Mark II system which was developed at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in the U.S. in 1971. The conduction of a large-scale experiment, which might involve the study of a number of extragalactic compact sources, is discussed. Four or five stations are used for such an experiment. The time devoted to the measurements can be about a week. The preparatory work begins several months or more before the actual conduction of the measurements. Attention is also given to questions of project organization, including aspects of cooperation between European and non-European stations.
