The Taylor-Jakes model (1974) of two-stage melting for the generation of the mare basalts is expanded. The following evolution stages are included: rapid accretion with total melting of the outer 1000 km of the moon, solidification of a thin crystal skin, crystallization of plagioclase, upward fractionation as orthocumulates of sunken mafic cumulates, nonequilibrium melting and mixing of the feldspathic crust by impacts, radioactive heating of the upper mafic orthocumulates, and radioactive heating of lower mafic orthocumulates.
