It is noted that accretion and subsequent diffusion of cometary material or dust grains by the sun could have produced the observed solar surface abundances. Diffusion theory is used to determine the minimum mass of the convection zone such that transport processes at its base do not affect abundances within it. This mass is found to be between 0.003 and 0.01 solar mass. A general expression is given for the diffusion time scale as a function of convection-zone mass.
