It is suggested that, when atomic clocks are used in celestial mechanics, allowance should be made for two kinds of possible clock anomalies: (1) a cosmological variation (Dyson 1972) of the frequency standard and (2) a spatial variation due to the gravitational potential. As an example, the 'anomalous' clock is studied in relation to the two body problem, with particular attention given to the case in which the distance between the two bodies is measured, as in laser lunar ranging, with the transit time method.
