The propagation of a shock wave induced by a supernova is examined, accounting for the energy loss due to thermal radiation. First order equations are derived for the distributions of velocity, density and pressure in the shock. It is shown that the energy loss causes a reduction in central pressure during the early stage of the shock. When the central pressure becomes negligible, the propagation of the shock is effectively driven-free. It is suggested that defining the starting time of the effectively driven-free stage as the time when one half of the initial energy has been lost leads to overestimation.
