A method is developed by which the problem of the transport and acceleration of cosmic ray particles in one-dimensional plasma flows can be treated. The method is applied to the problem of particle acceleration in modified shock fronts under the assumption that the diffusion coefficient is independent of particle momentum and the particles are ultrarelativisitic. In the case of nonrelativistic flows the method is used to demonstrate that the diffusion approximation yields a more accurate answer than can be expected in view of the restrictions imposed in its derivation.
