The discovery of the massive X-ray binaries has made it clear that supernovae do indeed occur in the progenitor systems of the massive X-ray binaries. A model is proposed in which massive X-ray binaries and runaway stars are different subgroups of the high velocity OB stars and have been accelerated by asymmetric supernova explosions in massive binary systems. Statistical calculations are made to estimate the expected ratio of the number of single runaway stars to the number of massive X-ray binaries: the expected ratio is found to be about 17. This result is in fair agreement with the observations. Whether massive X-ray binaries are accelerated objects is examined. Three runaway characteristics are distinguished to test this hypothesis: peculiar radial velocity distribution, Galactic height distributon and the percentage which belongs to OB associations. Strong indications that the massive X-ray binaries are indeed high velocity objects are found.
