A common formalism is used to study the equilibrium structure of three self-gravitating many-particle systems which may model different aspects of the invisible halos pervading the galactic disks. The analysis is focused on the degenerate Fermi gas, the dilute Bose gas, and the classical perfect gas. In the first case, the role of the exchange interaction is included in the method; in the second case, the consideration of an explicit repulsive interaction between the bosons allows the use of an equation of state and, in its leading order, leads to an n = 1 polytrope. Finally, it is proven how the asymptotic constancy in the rotational velocity leads necessarily to the equation of state of the classical perfect gas and, from this unified perspective, the structure of the isothermal sphere is analyzed.
