The analysis of the variation of the internal rotation measure RM(i) with azimuthal angle is extended here to an axisymmetric magnetic field structure. The method's limitations are shown and the analysis is applied to new high-resolution observations of the galaxy IC342. From observations of IC342, it is concluded that this galaxy has an axisymmetric magnetic field structure as generated by an alpha-omega dynamo in its first mode m = 0. The magnetic field lines are oriented inwards everywhere. The observations also indicate that IC342 has an even magnetic field configuration with respect to the Galactic plane. The RM analysis is then further developed to derive the location and the pitch angle for M81. It is shown for the first time that the azimuthal RM distribution is clearly double-periodical between 6 kpc and 12 kpc radius. This gives strong evidence for a bisymmetric magnetic field structure in M81 as generated by an alpha-omega-dynamo with mode m = 1.
