In order to explore the image degradation of the 12-m Deutsches Grossteleskop due to segmentation, the correlation function of wavefront errors (the rms phase difference) of pairs of points have been determined as a function of their separation (L). It is assumed that the segments are optically perfect, but are dislocated due to residual imperfections of their positional control. The correlation function is found to increase significantly with the degree of segmentation for small L values, but to be rather independent of the segmentation for large L values. The number of segments determines the useful domain of L, and is limited by diffraction and Fried's atmospheric parameter.
