The primary driver in design optimizations for the all-reflective Schmidt telescope of the Hipparcos payload has been the achievement of a 2-milliarcsec accuracy in star position measurements; this possibility is suggested by the 'beam combiner' telescope configuration used, in which the Schmidt reflective collector is cut in two halves and reassembled by bonding at a 29-deg angle to yield a final wavefront distortion of lambda/60 RMS. A chromaticity of less than 3 milliarcsec has thus far been achieved by these means.
