The design goals for the enclosure of the National New Technology Telescope (NNTT) encompass severe weather protection, reduction of wind-induced motions, and the facilitation of quick changes of the optical elements, while being sufficiently low in thermal mass to minimize the dome seeing problem and able to furnish effective ventilation; all this, at minimum cost. Attention is presently given to engineering design considerations for the reconciliation of potential conflicts among these requirements. Consideration is being given to a boxlike enclosure and a carousel-type enclosure; the former is being used by the Multiple Mirror Telescope, and the latter has been used by the UK/NL 15-m mm-wave radio telescope on Mauna Kea.
