The faint object spectrograph is a highly efficient, fixed format spectrograph using a CCD detector and aimed at low resolution (15 - 20 Å fwhm) spectrophotometry over the range 4000 to 10500 Å. The overall efficiency including atmosphere and telescope absorption is 12% at 7000 Å and a zenith distance of 27.5. It has a fixed spectrum format and is provided with an extensive set of on-line data reduction and analysis operations.
