A radiometric gain calibration technique for application to medium-gain cm and mm wavelength horn antennas, with accuracy to within about 0.1 dB in many cases of practical interest, is described. Measurements were taken with a test horn antenna of known radiation characteristics, in order to verify accuracy in the two-temperature black disk gain calibration. The simplest geometry: conical horn with linear rate of flare and dominant mode waveguide excitation, was decided upon. Prime-focus antennas and Cassegrain reflector antennas also lend themselves to calibration by this method, if the microwave radiometer output can be calibrated in terms of antenna temperature referred to the feed horn aperture plane. The calibration technique is useful in low angular resolution radiometry of celestial sources, high spatial resolution studies of planetary atmospheres and surfaces, and calibration standards for comparison with high-gain ground-based antennas.
