The nonpolar variation in the latitude of the Earth (z-term variation)
due to nontidal deformations of the geoid is calculated. It is shown
that the z-term estimates are free of error due to stellar declination
and proper motion. The contribution of individual harmonics to the mean
z-term fluctuations is assessed.
