It has been observed that Coulomb's friction law, which is commonly used to describe frictional forces between powder particles that are being manipulated by mechanical means, is not adequate when applied to compaction of fine powders in the manufacture of ceramic articles, where friction appears to increase for smaller particles. A theory is presented, which explains the failure of Coulomb's law in the case of powders with very high surface area. The apparent increase in friction is explained by considering in detail the contact of loaded adhesive elastic spheres.
