The composition of the Precambrian atmosphere is not known: published estimates of the abundance of carbon dioxide vary from complete absence to the status of principal constituent. The proposition that abundant carbon dioxide would be quickly removed by weathering reactions with silicates has led to the concept of a "Urey equilibrium" as the principal control of carbon dioxide partial pressure. It is argued that weathering in the Precambrian could have been so slow as to make this concept valueless for the interpretation of the surface history of the earth.
